Support at Care and Support Assessment

Care Act Advocacy

What is Care Act Advocacy?

The Care Act 2014 says that some people are legally entitled to have an independent advocate to support them to understand and participate in their health and social care assessments, support plans, reviews or safeguarding enquiries. This can be for assessments for your own care needs, or for your needs as a carer

When Can I get a Care Act Advocate?

You may be entitled to an independent Care Act advocate to support you through:
Support Plans
support plan reviews
care act assessment
safeguarding enquiries

Who is entitled to a Care Act Advocate?

You can get the support of a Care Act Advocate if:

  • You would find it difficult to be actively involved in your care and support plans without an advocate and
  • You do not already have someone suitable who can help you.

In addition to this under the Care Act there is a requirement for people to be given an advocate to support them through the Safeguarding process, to help them un derstand and have their say about what they want to happen.

What will a Care Act Advocate do?

A Care Act Advocate will support their client to be involved in the assessment or review process, representing their rights, views, wishes and feelings by helping them to:

  • understand the assessment or review process
  • participate in the process ensuring their rights are protected and their wishes, views and feelings are heard
  • identify any alternative options
  • promote their own wellbeing
  • prevent and delay the need for care and support
  • take control of their life so that you can pursue opportunities to realise their potential
  • ensure the assessment or review process follows the Care Act.
